Quality Management Dimension

Combination of theoretical and practical class at the vocational school for personal hygiene.

Baseline / problem

At the vocational school for personal hygiene existed a gap between the theoretical and practical class. In order to improve the adjustment of theory and praxis new ways had to be found. The teachers of both two areas were working independently on different topics, with different terminologies and concepts, and had no common planning- review-meetings.

Good practice: (Measures, instruments, criteria, indicators)

In numerous meetings, in which teachers of theoretical and practical contents were both participating, the colleagues agreed on a common working focus (Pivot Point haircut-technique) and a coordinated plan for the distribution of the syllabus content. Furthermore all teachers are requested to use complementary materials and carry out adequate controls of the learning objectives, which will be discussed afterwards with the concerning pupils and other teacher colleagues.

The realization of the adjustments had to be timed. Therefore the following time schedule was developed.

Time schedule

  • September until the end of November 2004: work out common measures, formal principles, terminology, and teaching aids.
  • Until December 2004: lesson phase theory
  • From February 2005: lesson phase praxis
  • May until June 2005: evaluation and reflection
  • 2007/2008: installation of the “Moodle” data bank

Implementation:

The new adjustments were not only developed for the teachers, but also for the pupils, who should profit from the new adjusted schedules and their contents, the common terminology, as well as the materials.

To reach this target group, an information- and communication-platform was installed in 2007/2008, in which every pupil has his own learning environment. The data bank “Moodle” is used for the supply of practice exercises with solutions, other materials and online tests. By internet the pupils are able to reach the website also from their homes.

Experiences, evaluation of the output, and performed tasks:

For the section for personal hygiene this project was a great challenge. The effort, which the whole staff put into the improvement process, was worth it. The inter-coordinated class met positive response by the pupils, as well as the teacher colleagues agreed on the raised effectiveness of their work. The greatest impact of the new working method is probably the good teamwork of the schools´ staff. The successful trail of team-orientated working methods will also spread into other subject areas and improve the work on a sustained basis.

The developed approach and proceeding, together with the materials for the Pivot Point haircut-technique, and the subsequent evaluation will be adopted in the next year’s quality management process.

Perspectives:

The vocational school in Sindelfingen is one of two vocational schools in the city. Both are working on their quality management with different methods and instruments. Additionally to the adjustments in this good practice the vocational schools evaluate their quality development by different feedback-systems, and care for experience exchanges with other schools and partners.
